CROWNED free pattern

Approx 50gms of Handspun yarn (B), in a chunky weight. 50gms commercially spun Aran (A) weight yarn (I particularly like the hydro spun Lanarkshire woollen mills Aran, see links page).

1 pair of 5mm and 6mm needles.

4.5mm crochet hook.

3 buttons, odd ones look wonderful.

Cast on 18 sts using yarn A and 5mm needles.

Work k1, p1 rib for approx 5cms with RS facing you for next row. Cut yarn, leaving a 40cm tail end.

Join in yarn B and using 6mm needles work garter st (knit every row) for 4 rows. Cut yarn, leaving a 40cm tail end (do this every time you change colour).

**All yarn changes will happen along one side only, the top edge!

Rejoin yarn A and switch to 5mm needles, knit the next row.

Continue on next rows in k1, p1 rib as before for approx 3cms ending on WS row as before, with RS facing you for next row.

Change to yarn B and 6mm needles, work in garter st for 6 rows, ending on a WS row.

Change to 5mm needles and knit the first row then continue in k1, p1 rib for approx 6cms ending on a WS row.

Continue in this way, working alternate depth stripes between the 2 yarns and stitch patterns until the peice of knitting is long enough to fit comfortably around your head when slightly stretched, ending with a handspun yarn B row.

Using yarn A and 5mm needles k 1 row.

Continue in k1, p1 rib for approx 2cms.

Buttonhole row: (Rib 3, yrn, k2tog), 3 times, rib 3.

Work rib for approx 2cms.

Cast off.

Using your crochet hook take each yarn end (there was a reason for all those tails!) and placing your hook into and beneath the edge of each yarn change, work 3 chains (to count as first treble). Work another 3 trebles into the same hole, then cast off. Thread a large darning needle and use this to sew the end into the 3rd stitch (at the top) of the first treble to form a bobble. Tidy up each bobble in this way all along the top edge of your hat, threading in the ends and snipping tidily.

Sew on your 3 carefully selected buttons, then place your crowning glory upon your head!
